March 2024: Artist Honored for Environmental Art Excellence in International Sustainability-Themed Showcase

Many of the artworks included in the Brea Gallery’s multi-ethnic exhibit, "We Are Orange County," reflect themes of dark memories and bright prospects, embodying a yearning for home and the process of adjustment to a new life. However, it is the artists’ own narratives that truly capture the spirit of the exhibition. According to gallery director Marie Soli, the exhibit was designed to "showcase the work of the county’s ethnic artists and demonstrate their contribution to our rich cultural diversity."
The exhibit tells stories like that of Esther Preston, a 100-year-old Black quilt-maker who spends her days crafting intricate designs with pieces of castoff fabric. Another featured artist, Said Abdelsayed, a disabled Egyptian immigrant, found emotional and artistic release through acrylic painting and carpet shaving art. His works, including "Looking for a New Head," "Falling Down," and "Carrying My Love," embody frustration, adaptation, and resilience.
The exhibit presents a diverse collection of artistic mediums, ranging from abstract to homespun quilts. It features works from 22 ethnic artists, including Chinese brush paintings by Taiwanese artist Dr. Ning Yeh, Vietnamese photographer Tran Quang Tri, Jewish-themed prints by Vicki Felder, and Indian watercolor pieces by Subodh Maheshwari. Maheshwari’s work, "Soul and Deeds," visually explores themes of identity and cultural heritage.

One of the exhibit’s most striking works is Carol Miura McCormack’s "Where Are We Going, Mommy? Why?," a poignant remembrance of her Japanese-American family’s experience in World War II internment camps. Other powerful works include Emigdio Vasquez’s "Saturday Afternoon on 4th Street" and Henry Godines’ "Vatos Veteranos del Barrio," which offer snapshots of life in Santa Ana’s barrios. Godines also captures the essence of Orange County’s diverse spirit with pieces like "Surfer Sandy" and "The Hinano Boys," depicting the camaraderie of the region’s surfers and motorcycle clubs.
In conjunction with Orange County’s centennial celebrations, the Brea Civic and Cultural Center will host "An Evening of Multi-Cultural Art," featuring international music, dance, and art demonstrations. Performances will include Mexican musicians from De la Playa, African percussionist Francis Awe, Japanese and Middle Eastern dancers, and a Chinese dragon performance.
The "We Are Orange County" exhibit continues through August 12 at the Brea Gallery, located in the Brea Civic and Cultural Center next to Brea Mall. Gallery hours are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. Admission is free, and guided tours are available by appointment.
