Gouache and Design Workshop Reviews

On April 19, 2026, I was happy to give my students an opportunity to explore pattern and design with gouache in a hybrid in-person and online workshop. It was a joyful day of learning, focused practice, and creative growth.

I recently attended Subodh Maheshwari’s Gouache and Design Workshop, and it was a genuinely inspiring experience. She brings exactly the kind of energy and free-spirited creativity she describes—making the space feel welcoming, expressive, and full of possibility from the start.

The workshop was thoughtfully structured, covering both the foundations and more experimental aspects of working with gouache. We explored the history of the medium, paint consistency, and how water affects color fading and opacity. She guided us through blending and color mixing with clarity, making complex ideas feel approachable.

What really stood out was the hands-on exploration. We experimented with texturizing techniques using soap, alcohol, and sponges, and learned how different brushes can completely change the outcome of a piece. Subodh also emphasized art composition and introduced color patterns and design elements from different cultures, which added depth and context to the creative process.

Beyond technique, she truly focuses on engaging the mind, body, and spirit through art. Her passion for teaching is evident, and she creates an environment where you feel encouraged to explore, take risks, and enjoy the process.

Overall, it was a rewarding and enriching workshop, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in developing both their technical skills and creative confidence.

Subodh’s Gouache workshop was absolutely wonderful. Her knowledge of gouache, especially how to manage water to paint ratio was incredibly helpful. She taught a variety of techniques, including creating different textures, brush strokes and blending and layering colors She also introduced us to different motif styles.

I left feeling inspired and excited to incorporate Gouache into my own pattern design work. And as a bonus, her large, beautiful studio filled with her original artwork made the experience even more special.
